What Do Room Air Conditioners Compress If They Don’t Use Refrigerant To Transfer Heat?

January 30th, 2010 OrlyZiya 1 comment

Nothing. The refrigerant is the means by which heat is transferred from one space to another. If there is no refrigerant, then all you have is a big lump of various types of metal and plastics. It would become a very large paper weight, or door stop.
It would appear that a study of how a refrigerator, or air conditioner works might be a study that you would do well to pursue.
By the way, “refrigerant” is the proper term, while “freon” is the common term. They both, at least to the ‘layman’ refer to the same working fluid in a refrigeration cycle machine. Even using a salt brine for cooling, a refrigeration machine is used if ice is not used to cool the salt brine.

Why Do Car Air Conditioners Use Up Gas When They Only Work On Electricity To Begin With?

Don’t know who you have been talking too; but, the air conditioner runs off a compressor, the compressor is turned by a pulley and belt on the engine. When you turn on the air conditioner it is adding more items for the engine to turn which means the vehicle must idle up a bit more to compensate for the draw of horse power lost from pulling//turning the compressor. The only thing on a A/C that is electrical is the fan or blower motors that push air across cooled coils behind the dash board in your car. I can’t get any more simpler than that.. That’s how it works and that’s where the extra gas come from. You want to use up even more gas than turn off the A/C and roll down the windows; Cars are designed to operate better with the windows up than when they are down due to the drag wind create passing Thu your vehicle. Understand??? Good!
