Room Air Conditioners…

I’m in southern california and so are my grandparents. They are kinda old and the heat makes them weaker. A fan doesn’t do much as it just spreads the hot air. We can’t use an air conditioner that requires a vent. Preferably something that can sit in the middle of the room, plugged in, and can make hot air. Might sound too good to be true, but anyone have any ideas? Price and where to get it as well. THanks.

My elderly parents seem to be more fatigued than normal. We have noticed a “mechanical” smell in the apartment after leaving for a couple of hours (in other words, you don’t notice it when you are inside because you quickly acclimate). Since they are retired in Florida the A.C. is on constantly. I remember a tennis great (I think it was Vitas Geralitis) died from carbon monoxide poisoning from, I think, falling asleep in an air-conditioned room. Would like to avoid that!!
