Has Underachieving Turn Into A Common Practice
Your co-worker or friend gets a promotion and you are genuinely pleased for them. However, that voice in your head is whispering “you could achieve more yourself you know”.
Your arena for achievement may not be a promotion at work; it could be any number of things. The problem is that you have allowed underachieving to become a habit.
This does not mean you are a bad person; in fact, you are most likely a kind and supportive person. You just have a self limiting habit and it is holding you back.
Now we are at the heart of the matter. You are aware that you could achieve more. Like all bad habits, changing them can be tough.
Some signs you are underachieving
Spending a lot of time thinking or planning for something and yet never actually doing it.
Doing just enough to “get by”, even when what you are doing is important to you.
Ambivalence about making decisions. This means you literally do not care one way or the other about how making or not making a decision will affect you.
Lack of organization. You would follow through but everything is such a mess you can not find the things you need to do so.
Feeling like a fraud. You feel you are just faking it while others, in your opinion, are not.
Postponement. You tell your self that you are keeping all your options open as opportunity after opportunity passes by.
Sadness. Your emotions are telling you that you are off course in some way. This may develop into depression as well.
There are many signs that you are underachieving and feeling low but how do you change this habit?
Knowing that there is no one way to change this habit is important. You are an individual and your path to change will be as unique as you are.
Breaking your underachievement habit
Be honest with your self. Even if you are unable to admit to others at first, being honest with your self is where all change begins.
Take stock. This is so very simple but take care to be kind to your self when you think back on things or situations in your life that reflect on your habit of underachievement.
Decide to not cheat your self. Underachieving usually has nothing to do with your true abilities, rather your sense of self worth or empowerment.
Practice choice. When you do not make decisions or follow through you are actually making a choice. It may be a choice by default, but you really have made a choice. Instead, practice making choices daily for a period of time until you get comfortable with making them.
Again, there are many ways for the underachievement habit to manifest itself and many ways to break it. You must decide for your self what works for you.
It is actually quite simple to know what works for you. You will feel empowered and your self esteem will be positive.
