Every old A/C has an old rusty coil. This has water running through it and the air flows across it. Once the unit begins to get old, it rusts, with the air blowing across it through your vents, thus you get the musty old smell. You can cover the smell by adding scented packets of potpourri in with your filters. Or just replace the unit.
It’s dust burning off the working parts.
As the parts heat up, the dust burns, just as if you are setting them on fire (no, it’s not that hot, but dust has a very low combustion point). Once it’s burned off, you won’t notice it again until the appliance has been off for a while.
That’s why you should ALWAYS use a vacumn to clean the motors of standing appliances prior to starting them up after storage or disuse.
It is mold
“old” being the key word.
Stop being cheap and go buy a new unti.
It’ll be more cost efficient and produce cooler air faster.
I know what your talking about! My grandmother used to live in this old house with one of the old AC’s that stick out the window. I dont know I thought it was mold or something.
Dirt and bacteria build up in the condenser in hot, humid climates. Bleach and hot soapy water will solve the problem.
