Why Do Air Conditioners Leak Water?

They aren’t really leaking anything. There is a refrigerant coil inside of the unit and the humid air causes condensation. It is the same thing that happens to a cold drink or the tank on your toilet when it is hot. The condensation runs out of the housing and that is the “leak” you see.

It is condensation caused from the humidity in the air around the cooling coil

Think of it in terms of a dehumidifier. Like when you fill up a glass of ice water. Condensation forms on the out side of the glass.

Cool air can’t hold as much moisture as warm air so the excess water comes out. That is why there is a drain by your unit.
