Our air conditioner keeps freezing up. We have to turn the air off, and turn the fan on, to defrost the unit. Is there something we can do here at home, to fix this problem?

You either have a dirty air filter or the unit is leaking refrigerant and is undercharged.
the first answer is the best bet, but also make sure the out side coils are not covered up with vines.
the first two answers are correct. your unit my be too small for the area you are trying to cool.

Do you live in high humidity ? with lots of rain right now ? Are you in one of the states that is having all the tornadoes and rain storms now ? No sun shine to dry every thing out. That is most likely your answer.

You are trying to coll too big a area and too cold so turn the thermostat warmer or it is broken. Also take it outside and use the hose to clean the coils.

All of these answers are good. Either the refrigerant is low or you are trying to cool too big an area. Refrigerators will freeze up if you leave the door open.

It needs Freon. This has happened to me a couple of times and that fixed the problem.
