thats the governments efficiency rating of how well the unit will work and save you money…the higher the efficiency rating the cheaper the unit is supposed to be able to cool your home…a 13 seer unit willl use more energy than a 16 seer unit to cool the same size area….Trane is a top notch unit with a very good warranty…usually ten years parts and labor…all units are the basically the same…but you only get what you pay for…a cheaper unit is usually just that…a cheaper manufactured unit ….trane, york , coleman, luxaire, rheem, rudd, heil, lennox, are all top notch units…what determines the life of the unit is 1 being properly sized 2 proper maintenance, 3 keeping filters changed every twenty to thirty days 4 how well it was installed…
Your concepts in this article have really made it simpler for, many thanks
The EPA will allow the production of R-22 systems to the year 2010.
The EPA will allow continued use of R-22 to the year 2030, well past the typical life expectancy of any system installed today. R22 IS MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE THAN R410A I HAVE NOT COMPARED PRICES OF THE EQUIPMENT LATELY BUT IF YOU PUT IN A 410A CONDENSING UNIT YOU WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE OUT THE EVAPORATOR. IF YOU STICK WITH R22 UNIT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE YOUR EXISTING EVAP. AFTER 2010 YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO GET R22 TO SERVICE A UNIT. IT WILL START GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE AS TIME GOES BY. I HAVE JUST PURCHASED A R22 5 TON UNIT, SEER 13. I WILL GET ABOUT 12.5 TO 12.7 WITH MY EXISTING EVAP. I BELIEVE. I DON’T REALLY KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY I HAVE SAVED ON THE UNIT BUT I DID NOT WANT TO CHANGE OUT THE EVAP ON MY FURNACE IN THE ATTIC. I HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE IN THE AC BUSINESS. WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED WITH THE SEER AND EER, SYSTEM EFFICIENCY IN MANY CASES WERE IN THE 6 BTU/WATT RANGE. SO LETS SAY YOU GET A 12 SEER UNIT-YOUR GETTING TWICE THE COOLING(BTU) FOR EACH WATT OF INPUT. AS YOU INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY, THE PRICE OF THE UNIT INCREASES. YOU WILL HAVE TO WORK OUT THE SAVINGS SO THAT YOU ARE NOT PUTTING IN MONEY THAT YOU CAN NOT GET BACK IN SAVINGS. YOU SHOULD EVEN FIGUTE THE INTEREST ON YOUR INVESTMENT. YOU CAN LOOK UP LOTS OF INFO ON THE INTERNET USING THE GOVERNMENT SITES AND WIKIPEDIA AND TERMS LIKE SEER, EER. I WOULD ALSO GO TO THE LIBRARY FOR THE CONSUMER REPORTS. I DO NOT HAVE MUCH PREFERANCE ON THE BRAND. YOU CAN GET A GOOD BRAND AND BE STUCK WITH A LOUSY SERVICE COMPANY. FOR INSTANCE, I COULD TELL YOU TO PUT IN A SEARS BUT I DIGRESS…..
SEER stands for SeasonalEnergy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a
number that describes how well air-conditioning equipment
works. A higher SEER means better efficiency and lower
energy bills. SEER is calculated by dividing the amount of
cooling supplied by the air conditioner or heat pump (Btu’s
per hour) by the power (watts) used by the cooling equipment
under a specific set of seasonal conditions.
My only advice is to get a unit that uses R 410-a instead of a R-22 unit. R-22 units are being phased out and R-410 A units will be replacing them. In my opinion most of the brands are the same. Look for one with a good warranty.
I agree w/ wwwstat on this one. I will also throw in Carrier, Bryant and Comfortmaker as 3 very good quality brands. Personally, I always try to buy either Carrier or Comfortmaker (made by Carrier), especially if it is for my own home.
Janitrol and Goodman are NOT on my “wishlist”…..

I suggest going to Home Depot or Sears. They have a huge variety of air conditioners and are very knowledgeable. They have the units on display as well.
Before you buy an air conditioner make sure that the “house” can handle the energy consumption from an AC – some of the houses can handle bigger units.
