How Should I Install My Window Mount Air Conditioner?

I have weird old windows with the aftermarket aluminum storms. The frame for the storm is higher than the bottom window sill. Last year we had a lot of air leakage around the air conditioner and the water didn’t drain properly. My hubby won’t put them in again until I figure something out and it’s getting hot up here!

First I would look in the mounting brackets for window A/c. They are very good and easy installation. They cost about $30. The one I bought (online at Lowes I think) also had a built on level that assured the unit would be leveled properly. It has a brace that pushes against the outside wall and makes adjusting the level easier.

For the raised lip of the aluminium window you may need to mount (screw on so it can be removed easily) a board to the window sill (I am assuming the sill is wood) with a notch in it to make space for the lip so the a/c and the bracket is mounted to the board. That way it is not resting on the that frame and is leveled.
Now that you have the idea, I would take pictures of it, plus measure stuff, like the lip, and go to a home store where they sell the brackets and talk to them. Go at a time they are not too busy. Some of those guys (or gals) LOVE to solve problems like this. This is what they do. They might cut the wood for you.
The air leaks are easier. I have seen all sorts of stuff. Cardboard, a temporary plexiglass panel, the skirts of course, foam, styrofoam, foam insulation into plastic so it doesn’t stick, weather stripping,….
They will help you with that too if your pictures are good enough that they can see what you need. It might mean a second trip after the unit is mounted.
Good Luck.
Search for “Installing a window air conditioner” and there are helps with pictures there.
It’s a hard question to answer without pictures of the window and air conditioner model. Any answer would really be a guess at this point.
put it back in the window let the back side lower about 1 inch
get 2×4 support back side, get some wood panel cut to size block it in both side
stay cool
Tape the air leaks with Duct Tape. try to tilt the unit backwards so the water runs out of the back of it. Good luck!
