How Do I Mute The Noise Created By Rain On My Metal Air Conditioner?

I have a metal air conditioner that is incredibly loud when rain falls on it during the summer – it keeps me awake! I thought there’d definitely be some sort of gizmo created to help mute/block the rain noise (I fantisize about putting a bunch of sponges on the top of the AC). Anyone know of any tricks or products out there?

buy a can of spray on foam insulation and spray a light coating on the underside of the top being careful not to cover any working parts or air inlets use sparingly as the foam expands quite a lot ,probably would be a good idea to lightly wire brush area you intend to spray foam on to insure adhesion to metal. if appearances don’t matter you could also just apply to the top on the outside

Actually you could put ’sponges’ up there, but ONLY if they are set on top of a ’slanted surface’ and not set right on top of the air conditioner. So, try just fitting a ’slanted surface’ of WOOD over the top (make sure it extends beyond the far outer edge of the conditioner) … which you could ’screw’ or nail to the wall or make so that it just ‘fits tightly’ over the conditioner itself. You won’t hear any more ‘rain’ … which is ‘loud’ because it is ‘echoing’ in the inside of the air conditioner in some way.

You definately dont want to do anything to block the airflow or you could ruin you unit. Perhaps a trellis box around it could hide it partialy and deflect much of the rain coming down.
