It really depends on the size of the unit. Usually with smaller units have it sitting alittle slanted outside.close the window to hold it and jam a stick between the window and the top of the window.

You don't HAVE to screw it in, but you do have to make sure it is secure and it won't fall.

usually an a/c sits on the sill and the window comes down on top of it and holds it in place. if it is a very large one, then you would need a bracket outside possibly. i have three and none of mine uses screws or brackets.just the window and the side flaps that come with the a/c

I've never used screws. When I got windows installed that opened from the side I just put a piece of plywood on top to hold it in instead of the window.

It could easily slide forward and fall from the window. That would not be good for the air conditioner or for any pedestrian below.
You could drill and fasten and then fill in the holes when you leave.

It isn't necessary for most, but it makes it less likely of a breakin. Screwing to the window won't allow someone to just open it or push the AC unit right in and gain access to your abode. The screws are fairly small, so you could always screw them in and then use some wood putty to fill them when you move. White toothpaste or spackle is also a quick fix.
