No risk of fire. But if the tree branches are rubbing against the back of the air conditioner it could cause damage to the unit.

I’m not really sure you should check with your teacher or the Libary.

Let me answer your question like this.
If there is any burning going on it is your boyfriend burning you.
If he is serious then you need to do the burning and get rid of him.
With hot summers like this the last thing anyone needs is some idiot scaring someone out of using air conditioning.
No, it will not cause a fire. People mount them on wood all the time.

if the bush is blocking a large portion of the unit it could cause it to overheat and short circuit which in turn could cause an electrical fire.

IT WON’T CAUSE A FIRE, BUT YOU SHOULD TRIM THE BUSH TO ALLOW THE UNIT TO BREATHE PROPERLY.THIS WILL HELP THE UNIT LAST LONGER AND RUN SMOOTHER.

No, its not true. The heat that is expelled, through the air conditioning unit is not enough to catch anything on fire. If it was, then a lot of places would be burnt down by now and the EPA would have banned them all!!
I would not worry about it…
    I wish you well..

your A/C is going to blow hot air out the back but I don’t think it will be hot enough to cause a fire. I would try to trim the tree back anyway, just for better air flow.

If the bush/tree is directly blocking the air intake for the air conditioner then there is a possibility of it starting a fire, otherwise I wouldn’t worry about it. Now, if it is a tree as you said in the first part of your question, then I would worry because lightning may hit the tree and go directly into the air conditioner and that will start a fire

The air conditioner is just blowing hot air and so is your boyfriend. Trim the bush so the air flow around the air conditioner is not restricted. 12 inches or more is enough room for good air flow.
