At My New Job, What Do I Do Since I Just Learned The Airconditioner Is Causing Me To Be Sick?
After 3 weeks of this, I finally went to my doctor today and she said I have an alergy to cold breezes. Always when the breeze/vent is right over my head; I’ve even gotten sick from Cassablaca fans over my head. My Dr. prescribed an “ARMLOAD” of meds (nasal, cough & phlegm) to keep me from being sleepy.
What I don’t get, is the management acts as though I’m just a chronic complainer (I’m not at all), and won’t even try to help.
I’ve feigned another reason for moving to a different desk next week, when this guy is leaving. Is there anything I should I expect the management to do? I’m so tired of being sick there. I feel better the moment the AC shuts off at 6pm, and definitely when I leave every evening I feel better. Weekends are HEAVEN! Anyone with suggestions?
I’ve gotten sick like this before in restaurants and lounges; & now, alll I’ve get is “and how do you KNOW the a/c is causing you to be sick?”. Is it all my responsibility?

It is the vents of the building and nothing more. Go see an allergists and get tested. They will be able to pinpoint what allergies are causing the issue. From there you can get treated. If it happens everywhere there is AC, then it is your issue and not the companies.
Your workplace is required by law to make a reasonable accomodation if you have a medical condition. You have gone to the doctor and can provide documentation to them. I would try talking to personnel, at my work they are who you would go to if your immediate supervisor is uncooperative. And as much as I hate law suits, you would have a really good case if they won’t accomodate you.
I would kindly talk to the supervisor with your doctor’s written note.
I think if your bosses aren’t helpful by helping you by moving your desk then I think there’s only one other thing to do. Leave. but first if you can try to get another job before resigning. Your health is too important.
The problem might not even be that you have an allergy to cold air, it could be that the employer has dirty air vents and you are breathing more dust when the air conditioner is on. Go to the Human Resources Department with this issue. If they don’t help you, they very well may be in violation of the law! And if that is the case, then you have grounds for litigation$$$$$$!!!!
i have the exact problem and the exact dilema. i am not even sure if the ac is causing me to get sick but i tell you when i go to work i feel discomfort. i think we should go to our respective supervisors and ask for a new office location. why should we be affraid of sounding as someone that bitches?
besides we can argue we will be more productive if we ae happy with our seating
Please understand that while I am sympathetic to your situation and do believe you when you say your environment is making you sick, one who complains that fans make them sick or they are “allergic to cold breezes” is just not going to be taken seriously. You can’t expect your employer to remove fans or air conditioning…but you can expect them to fix any PROBLEM with those systems. It’s HIGHLY unlikely you are simply allergic to the systems themselves and far more likely you are reacting to a malfunction of the systems.
If you want to affect change you need to take a constructive approach and find a way to identify the problem with the system. Maybe ask the management to find out if anyone else in the building is having a similar problem. If the environment is the problem you will probably find others with symptoms. Also, it makes sense to request that the ventilation system be checked out for adequate capacity and possible contaminants. The solution may be as simple as uncovering an air return or replacing worn system components or otherwise servicing the system. Those are fixes you can reasonable expect.
I hope you resolve the issue and feel better soon!
