Are There Any Dangers Associated With Sit-in Window Air Conditioners?

I’m going to go buy a second hand air conditioner and want to make sure there’s no danger. I never grew up with them so I know nothing. The AC I’m getting is Maytag. Quick Googling brought me to recalls of Maytag ACs that have heating combined. Just want to make sure there is NO fire or not enough oxygen problem that could come up with an AC.

No inherent problems with window A/C’s (aside from falling out of the window and landing on someone :-) . The recall you found is specifically related to problems with the heating unit of a combo heater-A/C. No worries about standard A/C units.
A 6,000 BTU unit will handle about a 200 square foot room. Here’s a page that helps you determine the appropriate sized A/C for your room- http://www.warmair.com/html/window_air_c…

Dirty air-conditioner filter can create respiratory problems. See if you can clean it or buy replacements.

If your window unit’s model or serial number is not listed in the recall, then there’s no danger.
In answer to the second part of your question. BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. The higher the BTU number, the greater the cooling capacity. A 6000 BTU air conditioner should be able to cool a medium sized bedroom. I doubt it will make it really cold, but it should cool it off considerably. When our central air went out, we put a 5000 BTU in our bedroom window. It cooled the bedroom but I like it VERY cold when I sleep, so it wasn’t enough for me.
